A happy HAAN for a happy (clean) home: Maintenance Tips

Tips to lenghten the life of your steamer. We LOVE to clean with steam.  If you share our sentiment then you probably steam clean weekly, or even daily.  While HAAN steam cleaners are engineered to stringent quality standards there are a few care and maintenance steps that can be taken to ensure your steam cleaner stays in top working order.

First and foremost HAAN cannot stress enough how important it is to use only water with your steam cleaner.  Never add a cleaning agent to the water tank.  Doing so can result in a cracked water tank or product malfunction.  Oh no!  Pure heated water can clean and sanitize just as well as any cleaning agent.  Mother Nature will thank you.

After each use the water tank should be emptied.  We realize that it’s tempting to just leave the water in the tank for the next cleaning go-around but taking the time to empty the tank before storing will lessen scale build up from mineral deposits.  Not to mention avoiding the musty odor that can be produced from steaming with stagnant water.  Eeewww!

Scale and mineral deposits will eventually build up over time – even with strict tank emptying.  There’s no avoiding it.  HAAN’s Fresh Rinse Lime and Scale Remover aids in preventing scale build up.  Just pour 1 cup of water into the water tank, add 1 pack of Fresh Rinse and gently shake tank to dissolve.  Turn the steamer on, and let the mixture work its’ way through your steamer and work its’ magic. Repeat this process once a month to ensure optimum function from your HAAN steam cleaner.

When performing all care and maintenance make sure your steam cleaner is COOLED OFF and UNPLUGGED!

Lastly HAAN recommends avoiding fabric softeners when washing the Ultra-Microfiber Cleaning Pads.  Using fabric softener can reduce the cleaning efficiency of the pads and lessen their cleaning life.

Other than a wipe down of the product every now and then, that’s it!  With a few simple steps you can extend the life of your steam cleaner and ensure that it will produce clean, sanitized surfaces in your home for years to come.

  2. Judy Thompson says:

My husband was working on the HS-20 as it stopped heating and left it too long and there is a slight white spot. What can be put on the floor to remove the spot?

    • haan says:

You may want to try some distilled white vinegar on a rag. Rubbing the affected area may help reduce the appearance of the spot.

  3. Nicki Woo says:

I love my Haan but it recently stopped working due to lime and scale. I didn’t know to clean it out monthly, but I just called customer care and they told me to run it using 1/4 cup of white vinegar with 3/4 cup water, and it seems to have done the trick! It’s steaming away:) I’ll be sure to keep the maintenance of this handy stick trick up monthly. Thanks again! I’ve had my Haan for 4 years, and I plan on having it for 4 more!!!

  4. Tarnesha Allen says:

My Haan classic no longer turns on. I have had it for about 3 years. What should I do? I am lost without it.

  5. Kathy Scheppler says:

I have tried the above with white vinegar. the steamer gets hot, but no steam..is there another alternative that I can try

  6. Sally Ritter says:

Do you have a special pad-accesories that clean grout between the tiles on the floor. The unit is great cleaning the tile but is lacking for the grout. Thank you for your help.

    • haan says:

Grout is a tough job, so we feel your pain. Could you share with us which HAAN steamer you have? Some HAAN steam mops come with floor scrubbing attachments that would be perfect for grout lines.

  7. Pat Carson says:

I have been researching for a steam mop for tile floors that will also clean grout and vacumee, not sweep if possible, at the same time. Is there a product or products that cam make this happen? Thanks

  8. Cathie says:

I have mixed reviews. It is easy to use and I love the way the floor feels when I am done and walk barefoot on it. It seems to do a good job.
On the other side, It is hard to get up close with the pad because of the sweeper roller. I don’t like having to switch pads in the middle of my job because it gets too wet.
No fault of the machine but the wood floor… It is hard to keep it moving and move things at the same time. Also because of the “no cleaners” thing, it just smells like wet dirt. I have to admit I am a chemical girl and love the clean fresh smell.

    • haan says:

I can understand you like the fresh scent of chemicals but have you tried our Steam Scents? We have three aromas you can use to provide the smell you are accustomed to – Fresh Apple, Juicy Orange and Freesia Breeze. But be sure to apply them to the pads and not the water tank! Another solution is to add 1/4 cup of white vinegar to the water tank.

To get up closer in tight areas, try rotating your wrist to angle your pads and use the side of the mop in the tight areas. That way the pads are leadibng instead of the sweeper section of the steam mop.

  9. LAELA says:

Does anyone know why my Haan SV-60 water tank crack? I already replaced twice. The leak water tank will not work for steam fuction.

    • haan says:

Laela – Here are a couple of suggestions to ensure a long life for the water tank. Make sure that you do not place it in the dishwasher for cleaning as the drying cycle is not gentle on the plastic. Lime and scale can also be very damaging to the water tank. If you live in an area with hard water, we highly recommend that you use the fresh rinse packets to remove the lime and scale. Another recommendation is to ensure that the water tank is empty before you store your unit. Hope this helps!

  10. Jill Boise says:

Is it possible to add a few drops of essential oils to the water?

    • haan says:

We do not recommend adding the oil to water tank. Add them to the pads instead and the steam will activate the aromas. Enjoy your scented house!

  11. Allison says:

Jill Boise, I didn’t realize that you shouldn’t put essential oils in the tank and am now shopping for a replacement tank. :( My tank dried out and cracked into pieces. But thankfully, they are super affordable if you didn’t know and used them already.

  12. Susan says:

I just bought my Haan from Costco.com last month. I tried to clean my vinyl tile bathroom floor with just water but the floor didn’t come clean. I added a 1/4 cup of white distilled vinegar for my next try and it worked the floor is clean. Now I would like to know if I can add pine-sol to the microfiber pad to get the nice pine-sol clean scent?

    • haan says:

Susan – Go ahead and add a couple of drops of your favorite scent directly to the pad. Do not add them in the water tank as it may damage the unit. Enjoy your steam mop and fresh scents!

  13. W says:

My haan quit producing steam. I have run the packets of lime/scale remover through it to no avail. We purchase it on 12/31/12. Please help… we spent a lot of money on this.

  14. Nicki Woo says:

Hi! I love my Haan, but I am having issues with it. It recently stopped working (says it has no water when I just filled the tank). I tried the trick with the vinegar and water, and it gives me one round of cleaning. BUT. . .if I want to add more water it will not work. I have to wait for the unit to cool completely and try again. This is troublesome because I live in a large house and don’t have time to do this. Is this a lime/scale issue? Would Haans Fresh Rinse Lime and Scale remover work better than vinegar and water???? Please advise. I really don’t want to throw out my Haan.:(

    • Linda says:

we had the same issue and just had to replace the whole thing.

      • haan says:

Sorry to hear that Linda – going forwards it’s best to use de-mineralized or distilled water in your unit and use the “Lime & Scale Remover” every month to stop deposits from building in your HAAN.

  15. Nickey says:

    Please HELP!
I have a gs30 and the refill tank indicator stays on and there is no steam, even when the tank is full. I recently noticed minerals coming out of the machine. I never received the cleaning packets. I called customer service and they told me to do the vinegar and water remedy, but it did not work. I removed the hose and I see all of this crud on the piece inside. How do I get the crud? The water still comes up around the piece as though it is flowing throughnthe steamer, but the refill tank light is still on and there is no steam. HELP!

    • haan says:

Nickey, If your GS-30 is still within the 1 year warranty you can call customer care at 1-877-422-6347. On page 16 of your manual under care and maintenance, mineral deposits: One problem with a steamer appliance is the mineral deposits caused by the high mineral content in many municipal water supplies. Miner residue inside of the internal pipes and heater can cause intermittent steaming or, in some cases, no steam at all. To reduce or eliminate the occurrence of mineral deposits, we recommend the use of de-mineralized or distilled water in the unit. However, regular tap water may be used in the Garment Steamer. If regular tap water is used, we recommend the use of a “Lime & Scale Remover” every 2 to 3 months to ensure optimum functionality from your HAAN Professional Sanitizing Garment Steamer. You can purchase this by calling 1-877-422-6374 or on our website.

      • Kristin says:

Hello, I am having a similar problem. I have the FS-20 floor sanitizer. The red light comes on even though the water tank has just been filled. While the unit is turned on, the red light will go on and off, and I only get intermittent steam.

I had this mop for 3 years and it worked great, never had a problem. We recently moved into the city limits and suddenly I saw mineral deposits in the water tank. I used 1 of the provided de-scaling packets, but I didn’t see a reduction in the appearance of the mineral deposits. My red light / lack of steam problems arose AFTER performing the de-scaling.

I will stop using tap water and switch to distilled water, but should I run the de-scaling process again, even though I’ve only used the mop once since the last time I de-scaled? Or should I try using vinegar? Thanks!

        • haan says:

Kristin, I would recommend trying the white vinegar and water mixture. If the problem persists, please contact our customer care center at 877-422-6347 for further assistance.

  16. Sally says:

    Hi,
I have had my HAAN for 3 years and love it. However, it stopped steaming. I did the vinegar/water and still not working (seems like other people here have had the same problem). My question is, do you have a HAAN repair place. I want to get it repaired as soon as possible.

  17. Crystal says:

I love the HAAN steam mop FS20, and I’ve had it for about 3 years. I have read the previous questions, and I have to say they were eye-opening. I shall clean my mop with the vinegar/water solution. I do have a problem with my steam mop, but unlike all the others. I’m having a problem with my pads staying on the mop. It seems as if they are losing the stick from the velcro. Do you have any suggestions? I have recently bought two more pads and they are having the same problem. Help!

  18. Linda says:

Hi, we purchased a Haan steamer and it has been working great up until recently when the wire got pulled and now when the steamer is plugged in, it doesn’t even turn on. I think something happened to the wire and I’m just wondering if the wire is broken what do I do to fix it?
    Thank you.

  19. Jasa SEO says:

Aw, this was an extremely good post. Finding the time and actual effort
to make a great article… but what can I say… I procrastinate a lot and
don’t manage to get anything done.

  20. Noni says:

The steam cleaner part of My multi-use Haan works fine, however when I try to place it into the mop area it no longer fits, it’s like the nozzle on the handheld portion is warped from getting too hot. There is no replacement part, and I really would like to use the mop. I purchased this unit about 3 years ago, it seems as if it should have lasted longer and/or perhaps the plastic around the nozzle was defective. What are my options, short of purchasing a new product?

  21. MARY ANN SAMKO says:

I bought my Haan 70 two weeks ago on Amazon. It works great, however when I tried to remove the hand cleaner
it seemed to be difficult to remove. Now it won’t go back in and stay there. the 2 buttons won’t grab and the
    hand piece falls out.

  22. Karen McKinley says:

I have had the FS-20 for about 4 years and I have never had trouble. I started out using distilled water (it is cheap) and have never used tap water as I didn’t want the mineral deposits to clog up the machine.

  23. Lynne says:

I had a problem with mineral build-up after about a year with my Haan Steam Cleaner, but now I use the Fresh Rinse and it eliminates that problem. Everything works perfectly . . . even years later. Happy, happy, happy!

  24. Micahlene Zaleski says:

I have had my Haan for three years and now the light will not come on and the steamer will not heat. Any suggestions?

  25. Judi L says:

I just received the SI 75. In the directions (#19 page 3) it says “never put descaling, aromatic or….” into the steam cleaner. However, I am reading on this forum that Haan is recommending vinegar and water when scale builds up or for cleaning. Acetic acid (vinegar) is a descaler, as is the packets that came with the machine, I would like some clarification. Is it safe to use vinegar in the SI 75 tank?

    • haan says:

      Judi,
If you are out of the lime and scale remover and are waiting to purchase more, a vinegar and water solution can be used in its place.

  26. Tammy says:

My steamer isn’t putting out much steam if any at all. Ive had it about 6 months and have used it only 5 times. Why am I having problems. Is it okay to mop with white vinegar. Will that help clean it if it needs to be cleaned. Is vinegar okay to use every time I use it. Just curious. Not happy. My cleaning lady has one and it works way better than mine.

    • haan says:

      Tammy,
Try using the Fresh Rinse™ Lime and Scale remover that came with your unit. This will help clear up any build up. When you are not using the unit it is recommended that you remove the water tank. If you problem still persists, please contact our customer care line at 877-422-6347 for further assistance.

  27. Brenda Clark says:

I have cushion flooring with a matte or dull finish. Until I got my Haan S70, I used a floor cleaning product that was recommended by the floor manufacture. I’ve only had my Haan for 2 months and used it two times. I’ve noticed, after using my Haan that my floor is streaky and shoe prints are left on the floor. Is there anything I can do? I love using my Haan. Thanks.

    • haan says:

Brenda, When first using your HAAN, streaking may occur for the steam is removing the build up that is left behind from cleaning solutions and chemicals. You may also want to check the bottom of your pads during the cleaning process. If you have a large room or a big mess, the pad may need changed a few times during cleaning.

  28. Denise says:

I love the HAAN steam mop FS20, and I’ve had it for about 3 years. I have read the previous questions, But like Crystal. I do have a problem with my steam mop. I’m having a problem with my pads staying on the mop. It seems as if they are losing the stick from the velcro. Do you have any suggestions? I have recently bought two more pads and they are having the same problem. Also, it seems like the pads get wet extremely fast leaving a wet surface. Help!

    • haan says:

Denise, we are glad to hear that you are happy with your steam cleaner. With regards to the pads, please can you check that you are ordering the correct pads for your specific machine? The correct pads for the FS series are the MF-2P (pink) but you can also use the RMF2X or RMF4X (blue).

    • haan says:

Thank you for reaching out to use Denise. We are delighted to hear that you love your HAAN and that it has worked well for you for the last 3 years. Please ensure that you are using the correct pads for your unit – RMF2X or RMF4X (4 layer micro fiber pads) are the correct replacement pads for the FS20 – the correct replacement pads should stay on fine. The floor surface should be slightly damp following a steam but will dry very quickly – if you are finding that the surface is too damp it may be that you need to change your pad during the clean – this is sometimes the case on larger floor areas. Happy steam cleaning!

  29. Chris says:

SL-70B won’t draw the mixture out of the tank to clean or make steam regardless if I use the lime packet or vinegar mix. It turns on and gets hot but nothing happens.

    • haan says:

Chris, I’m sorry to hear that your steam-cleaner doesn’t seem to be working correctly. One of our customer services team will be in touch shortly via email to assist you on this matter. Please can you have your purchase date and store of purchase information available so we can check if the machine is still under warranty.

  30. Michelle says:

I have had my Haan FS-20 for about 4 years and just recently it will not come on at all. I’ve checked the outlet and that’s not the problem. It won’t power on at all so I can’t run the lime scale remover. Any ideas?

    • haan says:

Hi Michelle, thank you for reaching out to us. One of our dedicated team will be sending you a troubleshooting guide for the FS-20 directly to your email. Hope this helps.

  31. Rosa says:

I was using my Haan floor sanitizer to mop my floors and it was working great. I have owned for three years. I stopped to refill it and then it the entire unit would not turn on. We emptied it, waited and could still not turn it back on. What do you think happened?

    • haan says:

Hi Rosa, thank you for reaching out to us. It sounds like maybe the outlet needs to be reset but it’s difficult to say without more information. We will email you directly to try and help.

  32. Kelly says:

I my si 40 has quit making steam. I always run part vinegar thru it to help clean floors. I have also done the reset where you put really cold ice water in tank. Still nothing

    • haan says:

Hello Kelly and thank you for reaching out to us. Without more info it is difficult to say, please call our customer care @ 877-422-6347 – they can conduct some trouble shooting with you. Let us know how you get on.

  33. Michelle says:

My Haan SI-35R powers on the unit gets hot but no steam comes out. I tried the descaler and it still doesn’t have any steam. I have the air bubbles in the tank and the water does go down but still no steam. Any solutions? It’s 1 1/2 yrs old

    • haan says:

Michelle, it sounds like your HAAN may be suffering from mineral deposits (caused by the high mineral content in many municipal water supplies). Miner residue inside of the internal pipes and heater can cause intermittent steaming or, in some cases, no steam at all. To reduce or eliminate the occurrence of mineral deposits, we recommend the use of de-mineralized or distilled water in the unit. If regular tap water is used, we recommend the use of a “Lime & Scale Remover” every month to ensure optimum functionality from your HAAN. You can purchase this on our website.

If the “Lime & Scale Remover” isn’t working due to high mineral deposit build up we would recommend trying a white vinegar and water mixture.

If the problem persists, please contact our customer care center at 877-422-6347 for further assistance.

  34. Janie says:

My Haan SI-35 has quit making steam. The unit gets hot, and makes a clicking noise, but no steam. I have done the Lime and Scale remover maintainance over the life of the machine, and have tried the vinegar and water fix just now. Still no steam. I read in this thread about resetting the outlet with cold water. How do you do that?

    • haan says:

We’re sorry to hear that you’re having problems with your HAAN Janie – thanks for reaching out to us. Please contact our customer care center at 877-422-6347 – they will be able to run through trouble shooting with you on the phone.

  35. Jane says:

Hi!, my Haan mop has stopped heating at all. Water shoots out and the pad gets soaked. I took the hand held part off and water continuously shoots out, but it’s cold. Would running the lime scale remover help, even though it’s not getting warm? Thank you!

    • haan says:

We’re sorry to hear that you’re having problems with your HAAN Jane – thanks for reaching out to us. Please contact our customer care center at 877-422-6347 – they will be able to run through trouble shooting with you on the phone.

  36. Jerry sieve says:

I’m having the same problem as Janie ( no.34). Lots of heat, but no steam. It used to work perfect.I have always used distiller water and periodically cleaned it with the cleaner. I never left the water dispenser sit in the unit when storing. Any new suggestions other than having it repaired?

    • haan says:

Hi Jerry, it’s difficult to advise without more info. Please contact our customer care center at 877-422-6347 – they will be able to run through trouble shooting with you on the phone and if your steamer is faulty and under warranty they will be able to arrange a replacement.
